Shenanigans on a late Monday evening

10:45 pm
I ask #1 to head outside to plug in the car. It’s going to be colder than it has been and I’m in my pj’s and feeling rather lazy. He asks if he can take the dogs with him. I hemmed and hawed as Boy dog has been having the urge to explore the neighbourhood.

“Okay, just make sure you keep an eye on him”

10:53
#1 comes in the house to get his snowmobile suit on and the key to the quad. “Damn Boy dog…he bolted as soon as I turned my back to fix the cords. I know which way he headed so I’m going after him.” Uhmmm, this is not going to go over well with your dad I’m thinking as SG comes into the room and tells #1 to do it on foot; the quad is low on gas. “No Dad, its okay, if I go now I won’t have to go that far.” A bit of a banter back and forth and #1 heads out to start the quad.

10:58
The quad leaves the yard.

11:13
The quad returns to the yard. #1 comes into the house, out of breath, red in the face and with a terrified look on his face. He strips down, plops himself on the couch and proceeds to hyper-ventilate. I ask what’s wrong and get no answer. I ask where the dog is and get no answer. I get a paper bag.

11:15
#1’s breathing begins to return to normal and he’s clasping at his chest, tells me it’s all tight and he thinks he’s having a heart attack. He says his throat is tight and it feels like someone is standing on his chest.

11:15 and ½
I try not to panic as I attempt to find his pulse. I can’t. Run to the bedroom for one of the inhalers and get SG.

11:15 and ¾’s
Run back with the inhaler and SG in tow. #1 says it’s starting to feel better.

11:16
“Where’s the dog?” is asked again.
“I didn’t find him, I ran out of gas” was the answer.

A small discussion ensues with #1 telling us how the quad, when it runs out of gas, the wheels lock up and this is what happened. He managed to limp it home however, on the fumes that remained. This story is not looking good.

11:18
SG gets dressed and heads out in the van to try and find the dog

11:19
“He’s not looking for the dog; he’s going to look at the quad tracks. And I am so dead when he gets back”. “What really happened?” I ask. I get no response.

11:47 (yes, it was silent the whole time)
I pick up the phone and call SG. “Any sign of the dog?” “No” is the response. Oh, okay, guess this call is over. And I realize that this really! isn’t looking good for #1. Not good at all.

12:13
SG returns, with dog in tow. Stern lecture is given to the run away dog and he’s locked in the kennel. We then proceed to find out what really happened, according to the “CSI investigator” SG. And yes, things were not looking good for #1. As a matter of fact, well, never mind.

Turns out he wasn’t really looking for the dog after all. He was pulling donuts and slipping and sliding all over the roads, having the time of his life.

Until he lost control and had the quad land on top of him in the ditch. Upside down.

And, now, here comes the kicker….

Tuesday, 8:02 am
“Hi Mom, how are you?”

“I’m fine, how’s your chest feeling?”

“Okay, it’s okay, just a little sore. Uhm, I was wondering if it would be okay if I went for my road test on Thursday. They had a cancellation.

What part of this does just not make sense? Oh yeah, the mind of a 16 year old and just how it works.

Or doesn’t.

  1. Jesus, Jodie - that's a story that hits home in kinda a bad way. I kinda got shivers... A guy from LDB working at AECL doing wildlife assesments on AECL property had his quad land on him this past Spring. He didn't come home. - coroner said he was under it for two hours at least. I watched it tear three of my friends apart for a good week.

  2. I was a little freaked out, particularly when I was thinking about what could've happened. Didn't get to sleep until about 3. And #1 was just as freaked out as I. Needless to say, he learned some very valuable lessons and I'm hoping he'll remember this when he goes to do something stupid the next time.
